WILPATTU NATIONAL PARK

Wilpattu National Park, located in the northwest of Sri Lanka, is the country’s largest and one of its most pristine wildlife reserves, covering over 1,317 square kilometers. The park is famed for its unique “Willus,” natural lakes scattered throughout the park that provide vital water sources for wildlife year-round. These willus attract a rich variety of animals, making Wilpattu an exceptional destination for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.

Wilpattu is particularly known for its elusive leopards, which are among the highest densities in Sri Lanka. Visitors may also spot elephants, sloth bears, water buffalo, spotted deer, and wild boar. The park’s diverse habitats — including forests, scrublands, and wetlands — support over 200 species of birds, including the Sri Lanka grey hornbill, black-headed ibis, and painted stork, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

The park’s history dates back centuries, and it has remained relatively undisturbed compared to other national parks, preserving its natural ecosystems. Wilpattu plays a critical role in Sri Lanka’s conservation efforts, protecting endangered species and supporting sustainable eco-tourism. Its combination of natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and tranquility makes Wilpattu National Park a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic Sri Lankan safari experience.
