Kaudulla National Park, nestled in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, is a thriving wildlife sanctuary covering over 6,600 hectares. The park is renowned for its large herds of Asian elephants, especially during the dry season from August to December, when they migrate between Kaudulla and nearby Minneriya in search of water and food. This spectacular movement of elephants provides visitors with unforgettable safari experiences, as entire families of elephants, including calves, gather near the Kaudulla Reservoir.
Beyond elephants, Kaudulla offers sightings of a diverse range of wildlife, including spotted deer, sambar deer, wild boar, sloth bears, and occasionally leopards. Birdwatchers will find the park a haven, with more than 200 recorded species, such as painted storks, open-billed storks, and grey-headed fish eagles. The park’s mix of grasslands, scrub forests, and wetlands ensures year-round biodiversity and thrilling safari encounters.
Kaudulla plays a vital role in Sri Lanka’s elephant corridor, allowing safe migration between Minneriya and Wasgamuwa National Parks, making it a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts and eco-tourism supporters.
