MINNERIYA NATIONAL PARK

Minneriya National Park, located in the heart of Sri Lanka, is one of the island’s most iconic wildlife destinations. Spanning over 8,800 hectares, the park is best known for its extraordinary Elephant Gathering, a natural phenomenon that occurs during the dry season from July to September. During this time, hundreds of wild elephants converge around the Minneriya Tank, creating one of the largest gatherings of elephants in the world. This awe-inspiring sight attracts wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and nature lovers from all over the globe.

Beyond its elephants, Minneriya is rich in biodiversity, offering habitats for a variety of animals, including leopards, sloth bears, wild boar, and numerous species of birds. The park’s unique mix of forested areas, grasslands, and wetlands makes it an excellent spot for birdwatching, with over 160 species recorded, including the endangered Sri Lanka junglefowl and various waterfowl.

Minneriya’s history dates back to the 3rd century BCE when King Mahasena built the Minneriya Tank, which continues to serve as a vital water source for wildlife in the area. The park is also an important conservation site, playing a key role in protecting Sri Lanka’s rich natural heritage and supporting sustainable wildlife tourism.
