Udawalawe National Park is a well-known wildlife sanctuary located in southern Sri Lanka, famous for its large population of Asian elephants. The park was established to provide a safe habitat for animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir. Today, it is considered one of the best places to observe elephants in their natural surroundings. The landscape mainly consists of open grasslands and scrub forests, which makes it easier to spot wildlife throughout the year.
Udawalawe is home to hundreds of elephants that can often be seen feeding, bathing, and moving in herds. In addition to elephants, the park also supports water buffalo, spotted deer, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species such as eagles and storks. A major attraction nearby is the Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned elephant calves are cared for and later released into the wild. Jeep safaris are the most popular way to explore the park, offering close and safe wildlife encounters. Udawalawe provides a calm and enjoyable experience, ideal for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
